Mairéad Fitzsimons PGeo EurGeol is Principal Geologist in the Geoscience Policy Section of the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment. Mairéad manages the Historic Mines Rehabilitation Programme and is responsible for technical aspects of minerals policy in Ireland, including EU Critical Raw Materials Act implementation. Mairéad is a Past President of the Institute of Geologists of Ireland and a member of the European Federation of Geologists.
Ireland’s Mineral Exploration and Mining Policy - a framework for modern resource development
Ireland’s Policy Statement on Mineral Exploration and Mining sets out a framework for responsible and sustainable mineral exploration and mining within the State. Along with Ireland’s world-class geological endowment and geological database, it supports investment attractiveness for key commodities including base metals and Critical Raw Materials needed for strategically important applications at home and internationally. This talk will reflect on challenges and opportunities for the sector and significant recent developments including the implementation of the EU Critical Raw Materials Act; and the establishment of the Irish Minerals Fund and the Historic Mines Rehabilitation Programme.
