VISIT TO BOLIDEN TARA MINE

09:00 – 16:30 / 30 October 2026

Tara Mine is located 2 km from Navan in Co. Meath. This underground mine is run by Boliden and it is Europe's largest zinc mine. Production at the mine began in 1977. The ore that is taken from the ground is crushed to separate zinc and other metals. 2.6 million tonnes of ore can be extracted from the mine every year.

The mine was temporarily closed in 2023 due to a fall in zinc prices and an increase in its energy costs. The mine reopened in 2024 when conditions improved. In recent years the company have been exploring a newly found deposit of ore just 1 km from the main mine, known as 'Tara Deep'.
