Session 8 - Social Licence as Industrial Policy: Why Legitimacy Is the Real Constraint

Mining in a Connected World - Lessons from Global Mining Communities on Trust, Participation and Project Success

As Europe seeks to secure the minerals needed for the energy transition, mining projects are increasingly shaped by factors that extend beyond geology, economics and permitting. In today's connected world, community perceptions can be influenced as much by events on the other side of the globe as by local project realities. Drawing on experiences from mining regions across the world, this presentation explores how trust, transparency and meaningful participation influence project outcomes and public acceptance. It examines the growing role of reputation in shaping stakeholder perceptions, the impact of global information flows, and why permitting processes often become one of the few opportunities for communities to have their voices heard. The session will share practical lessons for building credibility, strengthening relationships and improving the long-term success of mining projects in Europe and beyond.
