Bachelor’s degree in Geological Sciences from UCM (1979) and a Master’s degree in Leadership and Public Management from UIMP (2015). Until 2021, he served as Head of External Relations and Communication at the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain (IGME), and he is currently Technical Advisor to the Vice-Presidency for International Relations of the CSIC, specialist in mineral raw materials. He was Associate Professor in the Department of Crystallography and Mineralogy at UCM from 1993 to 2013 and has extensive experience in most fields of professional geology, including the cement, oil, mining, and geological engineering industries. He served as President of the Official Association of Geologists of Spain (2016–2024), of which he is now Honorary President, and on two non-consecutive occasions as President of the European Federation of Geologists. He has also held a Vice Presidency of the Professional Union and was a founding member of the NGO World Geologist. He is the author or co-author of 12 books and more than 250 articles in specialized national and international journals on a wide range of topics, from mineral resources, critical minerals and geological hazards to geological heritage, geological engineering, industrial ceramics, and the management of NGOs and professional associations. He is also a member of the editorial board of several scientific journals and of the Spanish edition of National Geographic.
Diorama – digital transformation training for raw materials
DIORAMA is an EIT RawMaterials-funded project developing a digital training platform to equip raw materials professionals with skills for digital transformation. Covering the entire value chain—from exploration and mining to processing, metallurgy, closure, waste management, and recycling—it applies Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Big Data, Robotics, and intelligent production systems. Led by ETSIME-UPM in Spain, SMME-NTUA in Greece, and ISEP in Portugal, DIORAMA offers flexible online modular courses worth one ECTS each. Its Challenge-Based Learning approach uses industrial case studies addressing automated mineralogical characterization, mine water inrush prediction, mineral processing optimization, aluminium electrolysis, tailings monitoring, and robotic inspection of flooded abandoned mines. Delivered through EIT RawMaterials SkillsHub, courses combine instruction, exercises, practical challenges, tutoring, and assessments, with subtitles and certification. Target audiences include managers, engineers, scientists, educators, and graduates.
